Social Climate Leadership Research

This mixed-methods study explored how social climate leadership shapes relationships and collaboration in urban primary schools in Jamaica. Social climate leadership is about creating a school environment where principals and teachers intentionally nurture trust, respect, and strong interpersonal connections—helping everyone thrive.

The study found that principals who modeled supportive, relationship-focused leadership inspired teachers to step into leadership roles themselves. When teachers shared leadership and went beyond their formal duties, the school’s social climate grew stronger, fostering collaboration and a sense of collective responsibility.

While transformational leadership supported this process, it was the shared practice of social climate leadership, principals and teachers working together to build positive relationships, that truly sustained a healthy school environment. Positive social interactions empowered teachers, strengthened teamwork, and created a school culture where both educators and students could thrive.

This research highlights that school success depends not just on programs or policies, but on the quality of relationships and leadership within the school community—offering practical insights for leaders seeking to cultivate healthy, thriving schools.
